Miami shooting prompts massive manhunt

A massive manhunt is going on after a shooting left a police officer dead and three others wounded at a traffic stop Thursday in Cutler Bay, Miami-Dade County, Fl., CNN reported.

According to Linda O' Brien, a local police spokeswoman, the shooting occurred shortly after 11:21 a.m. (1521 GMT) Thursday when Miami-Dade police officers from the Cutler Bay district were conducting a burglary surveillance.

At a traffic stop, they stopped a car which was driving erratically and attempted to question the driver.

The suspect got out and started shooting with what authorities believe was an AK-47 assault rifle, O'Brien said.

One officer was killed and three others were later hospitalized.

As more police officers came to the scene, the suspect got back in his car and fled.

One of the wounded officer is in good condition and the two others are expected to survive.

The suspect was identified as Shawn Sherwin Labeet, 25, who was last seen driving a 2007 four-door black Pontiac Vibe with a woman and two children.

"This man is armed and dangerous," O'Brien said.

Police initially released the wrong name and photo.

At least 200 law enforcement officers, including FBI agents, are searching for the suspect.

A Black Hawk helicopter has been employed to help.

A car believed driven by the suspect was found at a nearby canal.

An AK-47 rifle was found at the scene, but authorities say the suspect may have another weapon.

Police also are trying to determine if he acted alone.

A large security perimeter has been set up to search for the suspect, and police are urging residents to stay indoors.

Several schools in the area were on lockdown due to the search, but there were no students affected since it was a teacher's work day.

The shootings followed two other officers' shootings last month in a neighboring county. One was killed, the other was badly injured.

"It's a very sad day for Miami-Dade County," said County Commissioner Dennis Moss.

Cutler Bay is a district of Maimi-Dade, a suburban county of Miami.

Shawn Sherwin LaBeet, is the half-brother of a notorious mass murderer and fugitive from justice, Ishmael LaBeet, who was implicated in eight slayings at a St. Croix resort in 1973, a crime known in the Virgin Islands as the Fountain Valley Massacre.
In 1972 when Ishmael LaBeet and four associates killed eight people at a St. Croix resort, Carambola.

The five — all dressed in fatigues — sprang out of the bushes at the Rockefeller-owned Fountain Valley golf course in St. Croix and sprayed the dining area with bullets.

In the 1972 massacre, the attackers rounded up 15 people, four Miami residents were among them. Eight were ordered to kneel in a circle and systematically shot to death with a shotgun and .45-caliber and 9mm pistols. The four from Miami, two couples vacationing together, were among the dead.

The five black robbers, who had screamed racial, anti-white insults during the massacre, according to witnesses, then fled with $731 from the cash register and the personal effects of the dead.

Thirteen years later, on New Year’s Eve, 1985, Ishmael LaBeet (Shawn Sherwin LaBeet’s half-brother) overpowered guards from the Virgin Islands Department of Corrections who were escorting him on a flight from St. Croix to New York.

Ishmael LaBeet forced the American Airlines flight with 198 people aboard to divert to Havana, Cuba, where he was taken off the plane by Cuban authorities. The plane later made the flight to New York with the rest of the passengers.

Ishmael LaBeet remains a fugitive, and his crime still resonates with locals to this day.
